Usually, I try to avoid writing about Reading Check-In Posts more than once a month, but…life has been crazy. Right now, I’m still in the process of job-hunting, going to work (at my current part-time job) and trying to keep up with all of my reading. Not to mention, I’ve been feeling under the weather thanks to my allergies and hay fever (which hasn’t gone away, yet). It feels I’m behind on what I want to do and to complete. Yes, the job-hunting process and reading epic-length fiction is time-consuming, but it feels like it’s taking longer for me to get what I want done when I want it done. I know that’s not a realistic approach to have, but I’m used to setting goals for myself; and, those goals keep moving out of reach.
What have you finished reading recently?
This is a strong sequel to The Bone Shard Daughter. I completed the audiobook edition of this book, and both the story and the narration was amazing! While, the storylines of one of the characters was a bit cliche, the rest of the set up for the final book in the trilogy has me eager to read it when it releases in 2023(?).
What are you currently reading?
For the record: YES, you do need to recall EVERYTHING from the previous books in A Chorus of Dragons. I’m more than halfway through this book, and all of the action continues to come together in the falling action of this series, which will lead to its resolution. I’m anxious to learn what happens to ALL of the characters as all of the sides and all of the plans get closer to colliding in what’s supposed to be the final confrontation.
My current audiobook is the collection of short stories based on The Daevabad Trilogy. Please remember this was supposed to be ONLY an audiobook release until it was announced a text edition would be released later this year. That being said, I knew I wouldn’t be able to wait THAT long, so I bought the audiobook, and fans of this series are going to LOVE this addition to the series. And yes, I’m going to buy the print edition when it’s released.
What will you read next?
If this book is anything similar to Black Sun, then I know I’ll be reading this very quickly.
I’ll admit, I did start reading the first few chapters of this book, but I’m making sure not to read too much before I finish reading the other books first. And FYI: excerpts from Along the Saltwise Sea are mentioned in this book, but it does help to read the novellas, and Middlegame, before reading this book.
My next audiobook will be the sequel to The Mask of Mirrors.
SCKA 2022
I’m still reading my way through the nominees for these awards. The books I completed beforehand already have reviews I’ve written and posted. The rest of the nominees…I do plan on writing reviews for most of them, but do NOT expect them anytime soon. The first thing I need to do is read ALL of the nominees and select my picks for the Finals BEFORE writing out the reviews for them.
Book Haul
Thank you Orbit Books & Angela Man for sending me these ARCs. I’m looking forward to reading them, whenever that may be.
I want this ARC in a Goodreads Giveaway (and I believe I received an e-galley of it, previously). I’ve heard interesting things about this book. And, the plot of the story being about Neverland reminds me of one of the books that’s nominated for the SCKA 2022!
Those of you who follow me on social media saw my post about these books. I’ve been meaning to write a post about “Random Places” where you can find books, so I won’t go into too many details. That being said, I was shocked that a public library was giving these books away. Robin Hobb is one of the “modern” contributors of legend to the fantasy genre. Her books were recommended to me by a fan/reader of hers; and no, I still haven’t finished reading The Assassin’s Apprentice, I still enjoy reading the world, the characters, and the prose of Robin Hobb’s books. Now, library collection development policies aside, to put these books aside and give them away for FREE is insane. Yes, they’re a great fine (I’m hoping to find the 3rd book in this series by luck/chance soon), but it makes me wonder whether or not we continue to overlook the contributors to the genre.
Robin Hobb, alongside Joe Abercrombie, Sarah J. Maas, and several more authors, is an author whose books I need to read sooner rather than later.
Please continue to bare with me as I try to get myself out of this slump and return to sharing posts other than Reading Check-Ins on a regular basis. For now, it’s back to reading and writing for me. Thank you for your patience.
What are you reading right now? Which book and/or series should I consider reading next?
Good luck with your job hunt, and I hope you start to feel better soon. Allergies can really drag a person down.
I’m sure you don’t need me to say this, but be gentle with yourself. ❤
I know part of it involves environmental changes, but it feels like my allergies are getting worse every year.
I’m looking forward to starting The Hunger of the Gods! Good luck with job hunting, it can be so stressful😬
I still need to read “The Shadow of the Gods.”
YASS!!! Robin Hobb! That’s surprising they were giving those away. Maybe they had enough copies or something. The world she creates in the Realm of the Elderlings books is so amazing and the characters really stand out and stick with you.
Job hunting can be hard and stressful sometimes. Best of luck in finding a great job soon.
The job hunt continues as it does. As for Robin Hobb, every time I start reading her books, I stop for some unknown reason.
My allergies have sucked recently, too…I’m convinced it’s cedar/juniper. It rained recently, so that helped a lot. 😀 Though I’ve read SJM’s ACOTAR series, I am VERY behind on her other books. I dodge spoilers on the regular.
Thanks. It feels like I keep falling behind on reading, and being sick doesn’t help at all.
Fevered Star! I wish I wasn’t so busy this month, I would have started it already if I could. And I just requested an audio copy of God of Neverland so I should be receiving that soon – it does sound good, I hope we’ll both enjoy it 🙂
As soon as I’m doing reading “The Discord of Gods,” I’m jumping right into “Fevered Star”!
