I apologize for yet another “list post,” but I wanted to give an update on everything that happened since the beginning of February; and, I want to make sure I have more than 1 book review ready to post.
What have I finished reading recently?
I just finished reading this book, and I’m glad I made time to do so because it’s very good! I’m looking forward to the sequel!
What am I reading right now?
Now that I’m back at the gym, I’m back to reading eARCs during my workouts! This historical fiction/magic realism debut novel is worth reading.
I’m halfway through this book and fans of both the author’s first series and retellings of Arabian Nights will enjoy this book.
This will be the next book from last year that I’ll finish reading next.
What will I read next?
I won’t get to start these books until the end of this month, but I will start reading them.
Buddy Read
I did a Buddy Read with my friend, Sasha, and we read through the The Nsibidi Scripts before Akata Woman was released last year. Now, I’ll be participating in a Buddy Read for The Celestial Kingdom Duology with Shauna. I’m excited because I didn’t get to read this duopoly last year and it’s always an interesting experience to compare thoughts about a book with someone else as they read it the same time as you are.
Library Reads
This is the selection for the YA/Teen Book Club at my job. I believe the kids will enjoy this book.
What am I watching right now?
There are 2 episodes left in this season, and we’re getting a 2nd season!
SCKA 2023
Last week, this year’s judges of the Subjective Chaos Kind of Awards for 2023 announced the nominees. There are fewer categories, but that doesn’t mean the competition isn’t tough. You can read last week’s post and this year’s nominees here. Good luck to all of our nominees!
Boskone 2023
My first in-person convention since 2019 was Boskone (which is in Boston)! I met A LOT of authors, bloggers/podcasters (Radio Westeros), and artists at this event. The panels were very informative and I feel invigorated to start working on my fiction writing (thank you C.S.E. Cooney, Carlos Hernandez, Adam Stemple, etc.)! And yes, my book haul was worth it (I got the prequel to The Green Bone Saga)! I’m looking forward to attending more Cons (and hopefully, writing retreats) in the future!
Book Haul
ARC Giveaways!
ARCs from publishers.
I won these from a raffle. No, I received these books AFTER my trip to Boskone. Otherwise, I would have brought The Devil’s Arithmetic with me to get it signed by Jane Yolen.
These books were purchased.
I’ve been a fan of Salman Rushdie since I read Haroun and the Sea of Stories in high school. I’m excited to read his latest book, and I’m glad he’s doing better.
I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this book! This is the author’s adult debut book.
This is the 3rd book I hope to read this year that is 800+ pages! And, the author announced that she’s contracted to write another prequel for this series!
As you can see, I’ve been making progress in my reading. I’m hoping to get more writing done this month as well. Yes, the book reviews are coming back very soon so get ready to read some of my thoughts about the books I’ve read recently and from last year.
What are your reading goals for March 2023?
You’ve got so many great books here, but I can’t believe you haven’t read The Oleander Sword yet! I think I might be the only person out there that didn’t love The Last Tale of the Flower Bride, but I’ve seen a ton of rave reviews about it. And you have to let me know how The Devil’s Arithmetic is – I saw the movie years ago, but didn’t even know it was based on a book. It looks like you’ve got some amazing reading ahead of you, and maybe when things calm down a little we could do a buddy read?
I haven’t FINISHED “Oleander Sword,” yet. I plan on doing so by the summer! I would love to do a Buddy Read with you! Which book and/or series should we read?
Omg by summer? How are you able to put that one down?? And for a buddy read I’m not sure – you always have the best recs. I’ll hit you up on Twitter and we can figure it out.
We’ll see what happens. I’m not continuing the reading anytime soon.
I have no idea how you can do that
Grad school.
Ahhhh now it all makes sense!
LoL!!!
Ooh, the new Samantha Shannon! It’s so pretty…
I hope I’ll be able to get to it too, but as you said, it’s a pretty chonky book, lol. I don’t know where I’ll find the time to fit it in.
I’m definitely going to read it before the end of this year, but I know I won’t get to it until this summer.
