S.C.K.A. 2023: The Winners

We’ve made it to the end of another round of judging for the 2023 Subjective Chaos Kind of Awards! This year, there were fewer categories for all 11 judges to read and to select as this year’s winners. I believe the winners were announced during the annual Fantasy Con (before the British Fantasy Awards Winners for 2023 were announced).

I’m glad to say having an odd number of judges prevented this year’s awards from getting too chaotic as it had in the past. In other words, there were NOT ties for winner this year. That is not to say the voting was straightforward. If it was, then it wouldn’t be chaotic.

Here are the Winners of the Subjective Chaos Kind of Awards 2023

Best Fantasy Novel

Best Science Fiction Novel

Best Blurred Boundaries Novel

Best Novella

Best Short Story

“This Excessive Use of Pickled Food” by Leora Spitzer

CONGRATULATIONS to ALL of this year’s WINNERS!

One of the best things about participating in these awards as a judge is that it gives you a chance to read the speculative fiction works you might have missed out and/or overlooked from the past year.

This year’s nominees allowed me to explore more than just the “mainstream” releases (and I want to say it’s true for the rest of the judges, too). This is my 3rd year as a judge for this (bookblogger) awards and I’m always amazed by the titles I never even heard of becoming one of the nominees (and in a few cases, winning the award), which makes me appreciate all of these literary awards more and more. I was so happy I was asked to participate as a judge again. And, I know it’s early, but I’m looking forward to next year’s awards. I’m already wondering which of this year’s titles will get nominated. We’ll have to wait and see.

See you all in 2024!
